Stunning Views From Unique Project Site

In early April YHI New Zealand supplied batteries and battery racks to Genesis Energy for installation in one of their mountain top communications sites. Mount Pihanga is a 1325m volcanic peak located in the North Island, north of Mount Tongariro, between Tongariro and Lake Taupo in the Togariro National Park.

The remote location of the site means that in the event of a mains power failure the batteries are required to supply the communications needs for a long period of time while power is restored. Vision CL1000 2V 1000AH batteries were selected for the project based on their excellent reputation in standby applications of this type.

The site is inaccessible by road so reliability of standby supply is very important to the users . YHI’s Dean Jorgensen was on site to oversee the transportation of the batteries and racks via helicopter to their new Mt Pihanga home.

The weight of the batteries meant that there were only 6 per pallet per lift, with 14 helicopter lifts required in total including the 2 battery racks.

The National Park site is carefully monitored by the Department of Conservation and Environment so special care was required with handling and storage of the batteries to protect the alpine environment’s ecology.

The lift of the batteries to the site was completed in one day and Genesis completed the install over the next few days.
